Happy

My god, children are hard work. Why does no one warn you of this? Oh yes, they do, that old 'it's the hardest but the best thing you'll ever do' line. Well obviously, I heard the 'best' bit and from the dopey smile on their face translated it to absolutely amazing. But the hardest bit? I'm sure I did hear it but that smile distracted me. And besides 'hard' means different things to different people right? Of course I now realise that dopey smile may be down to severe sleep deprivation, but it is held in place by immeasurable love and pride and happiness.

Yes, children are hard work. But the joy they give in return in immense. And it's not just the doting parents who gain from it. It's the grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, friends, pets. Even the little old lady sat across from you at the cafe is enveloped in the happiness cloud your little bundle can emit with a single smile. Or she could just be smirking at your dishevelled hair and wonky glasses, remembering a time when she looked like this and now is grateful she can reminisce with fondness and drink her coffee in (relative) peace...

Is that why Granddad looks so happy as my girls jostle for a place on his knee? He gets the best bits: the smiles, the laughter, the happiness. But if that smile turns upside down he can simply hand them back!

This post is linked to week 137 of The Gallery, for the theme 'happy'. Head on over to see some more 'happy' themed photos...

  5. Lovely photo. My dad always says he loves his grandchildren because he can spoil them rotten then hand them back just in time for the sleepless nights! X
